UPDATE NM promotes safe prescribing practices
Understanding Provider Demands and Advancing Timely Evidence in New Mexico (UPDATE NM) is an academic detailing service which distills and disseminates evidence-based information and recommendations so healthcare providers can better serve their patients.
UPDATE NM is free of charge to healthcare providers (funding is provided by the New Mexico Department of Health).
During UPDATE NM sessions, we cover topics such as: establishing goals with patients for pain and function, non-opioid treatment as first line, lowest effective doses of opioids, reviewing patient’s history on PMP, prescribing Naloxone, and when to consider tapering and discontinuing opioids. If healthcare providers have requests regarding other pain management topics, we have a growing library of resources to share as well.
UPDATE NM also shares information on topics including:
- Review of State and Federal regulations for controlled substances,
- Risk of controlled substances,
- Awareness of substance use disorder and diversion,
- Pain management and treatment best practices,
- Provider licensing board regulations,
- Tapering methods for opioids and benzodiazepines.
UPDATE NM is provided one-on-one, and in-person. The initial meeting is usually scheduled for 1-1 ½ hours. We then schedule subsequent meetings about 4 weeks apart to allow time to follow-up on any requests. This service also provides the opportunity for healthcare providers to fulfill their Pain Management CE/CME.

Our efforts are funded to curtail drug overdose death rate in New Mexico. Since 2018, there were 537 drug overdose deaths in New Mexico – one New Mexican died every 18 hours from drug overdose. Click here to learn more.
In 2017, New Mexico providers wrote 54 opioid prescriptions per 100 persons (approximately 1.4 million prescriptions)—equivalent to the average national rate of 58.7 prescriptions per 100 persons (CDC 2017 Map).
In June 2020, the UPDATE NM program was expanded to cover all of New Mexico due to the positive outcomes in the southern half of the state.
Also, studies have shown patients are twice as likely to receive an opioid prescription in rural counties than in urban counties, contributing to the overdose death rate disparity.
