Functions include collection, organizing, analyzing, and dissemination of information with attention to detail and accuracy via CHI’s New Mexico Community Data Collaborative. This position also includes training in data literacy and technical assistance to staff, partners and customers.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in data/public health-related field.

Hours and Compensation: Part-time (25 hours weekly);

Salary Range: $34,200 – $52,223

Position Function Summary: Under the direction of the Executive Director the Data Specialist performs work directly related to the management and business operations of CHI and its local, state and nationally partners. Functions include collection, organizing, analyzing, and dissemination of information with attention to detail and accuracy via CHI’s New Mexico Community Data Collaborative. This position also includes training in data literacy and technical assistance to staff, partners, and customers.

The delivery of quality service and positive interaction with our customers is critical to the completion of all tasks within this job description, thus the employee is responsible for establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships with visitors, partners, and CHI employees in a courteous, respectful, and professional manner.  Guidelines include all CHI policies and procedures. 

Position Accountabilities

  • Interpret data, analyze results using statistical techniques and provide ongoing reports
  • Develop and implement databases, data collection systems, data analytics and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality
  • Acquire data from primary or secondary data sources and maintain databases/data systems
  •  Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets
  • Filter and “clean” data by reviewing computer reports, printouts, and performance indicators to locate and correct code problems
  • Work with management to prioritize business and information needs
  • Locate and define new process improvement opportunities
  •  Assist in the identification, acquisition and development of key community assessment indicators and databases
  • Perform administrative and outreach tasks as appropriate.
  • Coordinate training opportunities and train (in group and individual settings) partner organizations, staff and other collaborators in database development and maintenance, use of online mapping tools, GIS skills and data interpretation, and consult on analytic issues.
  • Provide technical assistance as needed.
  • Work with staff and advisory group to plan and implement data, training, and TA needs and to ensure easy access by the public.
  • Track and report progress of activities.
  • Develop partnerships with other multidisciplinary organizations.
  • Assist with grant writing and other resource development activities.
  •  Assist with other opportunities and tasks that develop as a result of this project.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s Degree in a technical or social science or related field

Minimum Skills/Qualities

  • Proven working experience and demonstration of ability to work with data, data sets and related information.
  • At least 1-year technical expertise regarding data mining, data analysis, research, and segmentation techniques
  • Strong knowledge of and experience with reporting packages, databases, and GIS platforms  (ESRI, etc.),
  • Knowledge of statistics and experience using statistical packages for analyzing datasets (Excel, SPSS, SAS etc.)
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Adept at queries, report writing and presenting findings
  • Critical and analytical thinking
  • Creative writing and report writing
  • Presentation skills

Desired Qualities

Experience in adult teaching strategies, taking into consideration theories of learning, understandings of students and their needs and backgrounds, interests of individual students and application of NMCDC services.

Physical Demands

  • Occasional prolonged standing/walking/sitting
  • Occasional lifting of supplies and/or equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional driving short and /or long distances
  • Frequent use of computers and keyboard.

Working Conditions

  • Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching
  • Considerable use of keyboard
  • Intermittent pressure due to deadlines and working with the public.
  • Must be able to travel by car and air locally, within New Mexico and nationally.

Special Requirements

  • Must be willing to use personal vehicle in the course of employment.  Must be willing to do inter and intra state travel as needed.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines.
