We do this by participating in and contributing to the capacity of existing programs including health councils, local collaboratives , school-based centers and more. We also align with all substance abuse prevention entities and OSAP-affiliated grant recipients to develop strategies and leverage resources in Luna county to increase reach, outcomes and capacity efficiently.
Sierra County Prevention
This prevention program provides all community members in Sierra County with the knowledge to choose a life free of alcohol, tobacco, and other substances and adverse health behaviors. Among our efforts to prevent alcohol and opioid misuse among youth and young adults, the Sierra Country Prevention team educates parents and guardians about the harms and negative impacts associated with substances as well as educating the elderly on how to properly safeguard and dispose of medications. We seek to help our community by lowering the percentage of youth misusing substances and underage drinking. We do this by joining and supporting other organizations, agencies and schools to provide outreach and resources to ultimately lower the percentage of drinking and substance misuse.
Unified Prevention Coalition
The Unified Prevention Coalition (UPC) enables community members and organizations to come together and address current substance misuse and mental health issues in Doña Ana County. Members meet monthly during committee meetings and collaborate for outreach, media, and advocacy efforts during which members can connect with new contacts, expand their own knowledge, and provide recommendations for future work to better serve our metropolitan and rural communities.
