Working with Communities to Decrease and Prevent Adverse Health Effects

Wellness and wellbeing are the first steps in improving public health. By engaging communities in health, wellbeing and resilience education, and working with communities and individuals before health effects occur, we can improve the future of individual and community health.

Services Offered

Coalition Against Teens using Substances (CATS)

Coalition Against Teens using Substances (CATS) is a committee of the Luna County Health Council. This program works on reducing alcohol use among underage youth and decreasing prescription use, drugs, and overdoses among youth and adults in Luna County, NM. We do this by participating in and contributing to the capacity of existing programs including health councils, local collaboratives , school-based centers and more. We also align with all substance abuse prevention entities and OSAP-affiliated grant recipients to develop strategies and leverage resources in Luna county to increase reach, outcomes and capacity efficiently.

Sierra County Prevention

This prevention program provides all community members in Sierra County with the knowledge to choose a life free of alcohol, tobacco, and other substances and adverse health behaviors. Among our efforts to prevent alcohol and opioid misuse among youth and young adults, the Sierra Country Prevention team educates parents and guardians about the harms and negative impacts associated with substances as well as educating the elderly on how to properly safeguard and dispose of medications. We seek to help our community by lowering the percentage of youth misusing substances and underage drinking. We do this by joining and supporting other organizations, agencies and schools to provide outreach and resources to ultimately lower the percentage of drinking and substance misuse.

Unified Prevention Coalition

The Unified Prevention Coalition (UPC) enables community members and organizations to come together and address current substance misuse and mental health issues in Doña Ana County. Members meet monthly during committee meetings and collaborate for outreach, media, and advocacy efforts during which members can connect with new contacts, expand their own knowledge, and provide recommendations for future work to better serve our metropolitan and rural communities.

Youth Substance Awareness and Prevention Coalition

Funded by the Office of Substance Abuse Prevention this program provides education and outreach to the community to help prevent and reduce substance misuse in Grant County. We collaborate with twelve community sectors to prevent/reduce underage drinking and opioid misuse including: youth, parents, businesses, media, schools, youth-serving organizations, law enforcement, civic volunteer groups, faith based organizations, healthcare, state/local government/tribal entities, and substance misuse organizations. The program focuses on youth ages 12-20, parents and families and the 60+ population.

We connect with different organizations and county partners by participating in outreach events, engaging in/ attending local meetings/initiatives, and holding monthly YSAPC meetings on the last Thursday of each month. Our partners help guide this prevention-based work and act as a driving force behind these initiatives. The support of various organizations and government officials play an important role in this work.
